A linear electric fireplace is a wide, low fireplace with a long horizontal opening, built to read as an architectural feature rather than a traditional hearth. The proportions are what define it: where a conventional fireplace is roughly square, a linear model stretches well past its height, which suits open plan rooms and long walls.

Most of our linear models can be recessed into a framed wall so the unit finishes flush with the surface, and many can also be hung on the wall surface instead. The framing dimensions and the clearance to combustible materials are listed in the instructions for each model, and they should be followed exactly.

Size to the wall rather than to the room. A common approach is to select a unit that occupies somewhere between half and two thirds of the width of the wall or the furniture grouping it sits within, so the fireplace anchors the space without crowding it. Measure the framing cavity as well, since the unit needs clearance behind and around it.

It depends on the model. Plug in units connect to a standard 120 volt outlet and can often be installed without an electrician, provided there is a suitable outlet where the unit needs it. Hardwired models running at 208 or 240 volts must be connected by a licensed electrician, usually on a dedicated circuit.

It is possible on many installations, but it depends on the model and on how the wall is built. The heater discharges warm air, and that air has to be directed away from the screen, so follow the mounting clearances and the vent position given in the instructions for your specific model before committing to the layout.
